proionic is REACH lead registant for EMIM-OOc

We are convinced that a company has economic success where its values and its products' values meet society’s values. That’s why we at proionic strongly believe in the future of ionic liquids as solvents for biopolymers. For this application recyclability of our products is technically feasible (stability given, critical parameters known) and economically necessary. The costs of an ionic liquid compared to other solvents, especially in the past, have led to intensive research regarding the recyclability right from the start. Therefore, we already possess extensive know-how in that field. For sure the price is still a topic of high importance, but that’s more of an issue of economy of scale. To overcome that we have now REACH registered our most promising candidate EMIM-OOc and will invest a significant amount of money into new production equipment to remain a reliant partner for our valued customers, assuring high quality ionic liquids at ton scale with short lead times.

We want to further contribute to the development of sustainable products and to circular economy in general. Cellulose and cellulose based products will play an important role in the future. Inventions like cellulose beads by Naturbeads Ldt. or the HighPerCell® process developed by the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (DITF, Dr. Frank Hermanutz) pave the way for the production of sustainable products with superior quality.

Green Frontrunner Update – Valorization of Austrian Wheat Straw
Our 2023 patented HIPE-REC® (HIgh PErformance RECovery) process can produce a decent cellulose pulp. We are convinced that this process can upgrade regional available feedstocks or wastes to quality products for the fiber or paper industries. First proofs of principles with different feedstocks have exceeded our expectations.

For instance Austrian wheat straw was investigated as a potential raw material for our new HIPE-REC® technology, applying distillable ionic liquids to selectively extract lignin. The fractionation of the cellulose and lignin fraction as well as the recycling of the distillable ionic liquid have successfully been demonstrated. The broadening of the potential feedstock portfolio for the HIPE-REC® process is essential. Besides spruce – the main soft wood species in Austria – which was previously investigated, the latest investigation of a grassy biomass feedstock is demonstrating the flexibility of this new technology.
Marcell Gyurkac (HIPE-REC® expert):
“With every new feedstock we gain experience and fine tune our HIPE-REC® technology. This is exciting, and we are very happy with the high quality of our generated lignin and cellulose. The obtained HIPE-REC® products will now be tested in various processes developed by our cooperation partners to demonstrate the full potential of the technology. Promising preliminary tests offer a wide range of potential uses. We will first start with the production of paper, biobutanol as well as textile and technical cellulose filaments.”
