Energy Storage Electrolytes
Due to some of their special properties Ionic Liquids are particularly suitable as electrolytes or as additives in formulations. Liquid and gel-based electrolytes are available for batteries or supercapacitors.
Increased safety and performance through Ionic Liquid-based electrolytes

Non-flammable, high purity electrolytes for battery & supercap applications
Safer & more sustainable electrolytes with increased performance. The unique combination of physicochemical properties make Ionic Liquids the ideal candidates for key energy storage applications such as batteries & supercapacitors.
Energy Storage Electrolytes are available on ton-scale

Due to larger scale production prices can be lowered significantly.
Ionic Liquids as electrolytes specials
01
Favorable physicochemical properties
Ionic Liquids have negligible vaporpressures, being non-flammable and non-boiling, even at high temperatures. Ionic Liquids are ideal biomass-solvents due to their high gentle dissolution capacity,, high recycling rates and low toxicity.
02
Formulations
Besides being used in their pure liquid form, Ionic Liquids are used as part of formulations in gel-based electrolytes and are applied as additives in solid state batteries.
In gel-based electrolytes, conventional polymers are mixed with Ionic Liquids or the Ionic Liquids are polymerized themselves. This combines the properties of polymers and Ionic Liquids that makes gel-electrolytes superior over pure Ionic Liquids in many applications.
Key benefits
01
high electrochemical stability
Stable from 0 – 4 Volts and compatible with a broad range of components inside a battery cell.
02
high electrical conductivity
Due to their nature Ionic Liquids are always conductive – from µS/cm up to 50 mS/cm depending on their structure.
03
high thermal stability
Ionic Liquids are non-flammable and have no boiling point. The thermal stability can go up to 400 °C.
04
gel-electrolyte compatibility
Ionic Liquids can be applied as matrix components in liquid, gel-polymer-based as well as solid electrolytes.
05
tunable solvation properties
Ionic Liquids are efficient solvents for solid conductive salts or polymeric components of electrolytes like LiFSI or PVDF.
06
low water content & halide free
Ionic Liquids particularly produced via the CBILS(R) process are halide free and low in water content at larger scale (halides below 10 ppm and water below 20 ppm).
